On the Go. Ice-cream shop in KIMEP University
Background
From January to May 2018, as a student at KIMEP University, I took a course on Operations Management. The main assignment was to create and operate a real business. I decided to open an ice-cream shop on campus. My idea was to sell ice cream in coffee cups with a wide variety of toppings.
There was one problem. Students were not allowed to do business on campus, even though it was a business school. So I wrote a letter to the provost and received official approval. Then I contacted the distributor of Mövenpick ice cream in Almaty. They agreed to sell me 25-litre packs at a low price and provided a branded fridge for free. The budget was very low, so my friends and I decided to build the entire shop using white paper. There was a perfect DIY feel. Finally, I designed the customer flow similar to SubWay and named the shop “On the Go”.
Outcome
Until this day, “On the Go” is the only student-led, on-campus business in the history of KIMEP University, approved by the administration. The shop was popular with students, but even more with faculty and staff. It was a successful project and showed that with a right idea and the right approach, even low budget is not the limit to do good business.
