Pictogram system for Almaty Metro
Background
Almaty Metro is part of the city’s complex public transportation network, used by millions of people every day. However, its current visual identity is terrible and outdated. Its logo is just a copy of Moscow Metro’s logo, while the signs and pictograms inside the stations are carelessly inconsistent. As Almaty is aiming to become a world-class tourist destination, I felt that Almaty Metro should have a contemporary look and consistent design.
In summer 2024, I finally found time to to imagine and build a new visual identity for Almaty Metro.Including a logo, a variety of pictograms, and a wayfinding system.
Outcome
This was a voluntary initiative with a simple purpose to bring attention to the issue. In the process of research, I studied visual identities of transportation systems in many countries and analyzed best practices for pictograms and signage. As a result of this work, I decided to focus on perfecting the set of pictograms widely used worldwide (pedestrian, bike, and wet floor).
